Workshop | Foot Matters in Pilates

The foot plays a fundamental role in shock absorption, propulsion, and balance during upright movements such as walking and running. These demands make the foot a common site for injury and disrupted mechanics. This workshop will provide a brief review of fundamental anatomy of the ankle-foot complex. Participants will then learn exercises on the Pilates reformer designed to challenge key muscles of the foot often missed in Pilates workouts. Cues and technique exercises will also be included that are designed to promote optimal foot mechanics that can be utilized in classical Pilates repertoire and functional movement.

Workshop | Hollowing and Bracing in Pilates

Early Pilates approaches often emphasised hollowing to activate deep abdominal muscles and provide lumbopelvic stability. More recent approaches encourage co-activation of the deep back extensors with the abdominals to maintain neutral lumbopelvic positioning through various bracing strategies. This workshop will provide scientific rationale for the utilisation of both of these approaches. Participants will then learn Pilates-based repertoire, as well as cueing for classical exercises designed to optimise the benefits of bracing and hollowing that will help prepare clients for creating core stability in a variety of functional movements outside of the Pilates studio.

Right From the Beginning: The Warm Up as Efficient Preparation

Effective preparation underpins the whole client program. The ‘Warm Up’ section (before The Hundred) of any program provides the opportunity to make or break the session. It is here that we can strategically set up muscle patterns, postural address, and specific focus that allow the program to build from an effective starting point. This preparation section can then be honed for client home practice and progression. In this workshop explore and experience warm up sequences based on strategic movement pattern and postural address, and take away strategies for maximising the preparation section of any workout within appropriate time frames and with reasoning for different client types.
Sally developed this workshop specifically developed for delivery at the PMA Conference in Las Vegas 2018.

Explore the history and development of the Pilates Method in context of a broader global picture, and build a perspective based in facts and actualities of the time that allows for contextualisation of industry development and lineages.

Within this context we will also look at selected repertoire variations across apparatus and across approaches. This will lead us into excerpts from Creating An Environment for Health. The Pilates Method can be tailored to address the specific indications of all sorts of condition, injury or pathology and is uniquely effective in such a format; but what if we simply strive to create an environment where a healthy state can blossom?

We will consider essential requirements, exercise selections and repertoire variations that allow us to layer a more complex understanding of how to function more efficiently and create a pathway to health.
